The UK’s Child Support Agency is processing payments by hand because its IT systems are unable to support the workload, according to The Sun newspaper.
The agency has set up a 200-person team to process a backlog of 100,000 payments manually, doubling its administration costs, the paper reports.
“The computer systems are in chaos,” the Sun quotes a senior goverment official as saying. “It’s a complete mess.”
The CSA’s CS2 system is one of the most notorious IT projects by the UK government. Built EDS (now HP Enterprise Services), it was launched in 2003 and was due for completion in 2008. However, work on the system is still ongoing.
